Once you arrive at Cayo Espanto, the award winning chefs leave no decisions for you to make. A new menu is created daily to perfectly suit your tastes, based on a survey you are asked to fill out before you even arrive on the island. Winners of awards from all over the globe, Cayo Espanto"s master culinary artists prepare the most succulent dishes with the freshest tropical ingredients in the world. Whether it is breakfast in bed or a candle lit dinner on your personal veranda, the epicurean cuisine at Cayo Espanto is nothing short of tantalizing. The personalized creations are an awakening to the palate.

 

Activities:

 

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is always a favorite activity for guests of Cayo Espanto who have their own equipment. Because hundreds of bonefish have made their home around Cayo Espanto, the angler will usually find great success all around the island. The hard sea-bottom immediately around the island provides for unusually easy wading. In addition to wading around the island, guests may hire a guide and boat for some wonderful flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit.

 

Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving the second largest barrier reef in the world is not to be missed. Cayo Espanto is within 15-20 minutes of some of the world"s best and most famous dive sites. Private trips are easily arranged. Guests who wish to dive the Blue Hole should be aware that it is an all-day trip usually leaving about 8:00 in the morning and returning at 6:00 in the evening. A private charter is available or guests may choose to go with a group from San Pedro. German Alamilla or Anastacio Badillo, our Dive Masters, are available for private charter trips. When they are not on a private charter with our guests they lead our regular open diving and snorkeling trips. To guarantee diving with German or Tasio, advance arrangements are requested, otherwise, we can not guarantee their availability.

 

Snorkeling

Snorkeling in Hol Chan, Belize"s National Marine Park has been named by USA Today one of the world"s top ten snorkeling sites. Private charters to Hol Chan are available or guests may choose to join a boat from San Pedro. Prices run about €45.00 per person for a boat and rentals are available. Glass bottom boats also provide another window to the underwater life below.

Boating

Another favorite trip is a day with boat and guide for some fishing, snorkeling and conching (in season). After a morning of fishing and conching, your guide will grill your catch for you on a beach. After lunch, it"s back to the water for some great snorkeling, all out fun and relaxing. You can also choose to visit other islands (some deserted and some with villages). Return just in time to watch the sunset and have cocktails before dinner.

 

Tours

For landlubbers, daily excursions to the mainland of Belize offer fantastic adventure opportunities. The Mayan ruins of Lamanai are a must. River trips and visits to inland spas are included along the way. Once again, private charters are also available.

 

Birdwatching

On nearby Cayo Rosario and Bird Caye is an experience for all. These islands are very close to Cayo Espanto and are home to many types of birds. (Spoonbill, pelican, frigates just to name a few). The adventure allows guests to walk around and through mangrove. This tour is highlighted by the Belize Audubon Society.

 

Explore

If you just want to go exploring in a skiff (our name for a 21-ft Mexican-made boat), one of the island"s staff can take you out. The trip is always an adventure and full of unpredictability. Deserted beaches, uninhabited islands, beautiful waters and an occasional dolphin can make your trip very memorable. €250.00/2hours, €20/each additional hour.

 

Picnic

How about a gourmet picnic lunch on a deserted beach for just the two of you? We will send an advance team to prepare the perfect romantic lunch site. Afterwards, we will deliver you to your paradise. Stay as long as you like and we will pick you up at a pre-determined time. Or, if you prefer, take our cellular phone and give us a call (we are only 10 minutes away). €200.00/couple.

 

Best time to travel:

The best time to travel is the dry season from November to May. Summer (July to November) is hurricane season.

Getting there:

Guests fly into Belize International Airport on US Airways, American, Air Jamaica, Continental or TACA Airlines. Flights are available from Charlotte (3 hours and 37 minutes), Miami (1 hour and 40 minutes), Houston (2 hours), Montego Bay (1 hour and 50 minutes) and Dallas (2 hours and 30 minutes). The airport liaison will meet you outside Customs and escort you to the flight to San Pedro. There you will be met and taken via taxi directly to one of the shuttle boats a few hundred yards away for the 7-minute ride to Cayo Espanto.
